Proposals for an alternative Salmacian flag

What is Salmacian?

salmacian (anatomy, neologism): One who has or wishes to have a mixed set of genitalia, typically both male and female genitalia. Aphrodisian is used as an alternative. Definition from Wikitionary.

The proposed flag

Proposed Salmacian community flag: pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a green background.

This is a proposed flag for the Salmacian (or Aphrodisian and Bigenital) community, intended to be an alternative to the current flags representing the community.

It is intended to be neutral, separate from the Salmacis myth, and was designed to be distinct within a sea of MOGAI flags (many of which are variants of the Pride flag). Anyone identifying as Salmacian can use (or not use) this flag as they please.

Meaning

This flag predominantly uses the ⫘ (Unicode: Superset Beside and Joined By Dash with Subset) symbol, originally from mathematics. Here, the meaning of the symbol is changed to represent the two sets of genitalia that is desired by most of the Salmacian community, joined together by a link. This symbol was used as it is available as a Unicode, allowing for easier online usage. The symbol also resembles a chain, which reinforces the “joined together” concept of this flag. Continuing with this thought, the chain emoji ⛓️ could be used as an alternative to the ⫘ symbol. The color green was chosen simply as a neutral color, representing all gender identities.

Why?

In my personal opinion as a casual designer, I feel like a lot of MOGAI flags out there, including some of the flags for Salmacians, are stuck on being more of a derivative of the original pride flag, and you can only stick so many color options on six stripes before it just looks like you hit a random palette generator. (I am, of course, not intending to disparage anyone else's Salmacian flag. Any flag, in my opinion, is better than no flag at all.)

Another issue relates to the Myth of Salmacis which is often used for inspiration for the flags of the community. Some members of the community wish to shy away from this myth due to its association with Hermaphroditus, as well as Salmacis' attempted rape of Hermaphroditus in the myth. This also has resulted in some people wishing to refer to themselves as Aphrodisian, altersex, or bigenital instead. My proposal on this end is the word Bicupian, which I hope makes it clear that it's a desire for both, rather than already having them, to avoid confusion (anyone who does have both genitalia can use bigenital, of course). That is, however, not the focus of this page.

My goal was to make something that would stand out in a sea of striped pride flags. It should be seen as distinctly Salmacian at first glance. It must avoid resembling other pride flags, such as the intersex flag (an earlier version used a symbol which resembled the intersex circle, and so was changed), the poly flag, or the ally flag (a reason why the other conjunction symbol wasn't used). Color also had to be neutral and distinct (purple made it vaguely resemble the Haudenosaunee flag).

Alternatives

Here are some alternatives for the proposed Salmacian flag:

Alternative Salmacian community flag proposal: a pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a red background.

An alternative neutral flag, this time red. While green is my personal preference, anyone can use the red version and it can be adopted as the main flag.

Alternative Salmacian community flag proposal: a pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a blue background. Alternative Salmacian community flag proposal: a pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a pink background.

The last two flags are the Masc Salmacian and the Femme Salmacian flag, for both masculine and feminine individuals who identify as Salmacian. This includes everyone who fits into these categories (cis, trans, etc). I will personally be using the masculine flag as this is the flag that best represents me as an individual.

Flag combinations

The following examples demonstrate a possible way to combine the Salmacian flag with other flags, such as flags for Salmacians of a particular nationality, or combining sexualities:

A pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a green background, with a vertical US flag next to it.

An example of a Salmacian flag for a local community (city, region, nation, etc). The vertical flag variant for the area should be used whenever available.

A pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a green background, with a vertical MLM flag next to it.

An example of a Salmacian flag combined with another pride flag, in this case the MLM flag.

A pale grey chain-link symbol of two interlocking, mirrored links on a green background, with visual annotations detailing graphic proportions. The central chain graphic measures 960 pixels wide. To its right, a white margin labeled

These are the proportions for Salmacian flag combinations. PNG and SVG blank versions available.

Concerns

At this time, I do not believe that there will be any significant concerns about this flag. Thought was put into symbol and color to ensure that any confusion with other flags are avoided.

It is possible that this flag may not adequately represent those who are Salmacian, but do not wish for a bigenital set.
I would encourage anyone who fits into this category to consider designing their own flag. The best representation of you is the one you make yourself.

Usage

Any of these flags can be used by anyone who identifies as Salmacian, or any of the alternative names for the identity currently referred to as Salmacian. No permission is needed to reproduce these flags either online or in person, including for commercial purposes. These flags have been released to the Public Domain. No attribution is required. If you wish to modify this flag to better represent you or your community (please do!), it is asked that you release it under public domain, or under a CC BY-SA 4.0 license. Usage for negative purposes (e.g. disparaging the Salmacian community or the LGBTQ+ community in general) is discouraged.
